Focus areas

The physicians at the Clinic for Cardiology of the West German Heart Center not only care for patients, but also teach and conduct clinical research. Their knowledge and experience informs their treatment strategies. Complemented by cutting edge medical technologies, our clinic provides optimum conditions for diagnosis and treatment. We treat patients with a wide variety of cardiac conditions, ranging from hypertension to valve disorders to inflammatory cardiac disease.

One main focus area is the diagnosis and treatment of ischemic heart disease.

This includes cardiac catheter diagnostics and cardiac catheter treatment of coronary artery disease and acute myocardial infarction. As part of the Essen myocardial infarction network, the clinic is responsible around the clock for cardiac emergency services for one of the four Essen city regions.

Risk education and individualized counseling on heart-healthy nutrition are also very important to us.

Special consultations

  • Congenital heart defects
  • Pace makers/defibrillators
  • Cardiac arrhythmia
  • Heart failure
  • Heart transplants
  • Heart valves and cardiac vessels
  • Myocarditis

Fields of Research

  • Prevention research (check-ups) for cardiovascular diseases (Heinz Nixdorf Recall Study)
  • Microtechnology in cardiology: intravascular coronary diagnostics, cardiovascular ultrasound, autolytic stents, non-surgical heart valve insertion, development of cordless pace makers
  • New methods in cardiac catheter treatment of complex cardiovascular diseases:
  • Aortic stent and aortic valve implants, micro-embolization for hypertrophic obstructive cardiomyopathy, cardiac resynchronization therapy (biventricular stimulation), percutaneous reconstruction of the mitral ring in mitral valve failure, mechanical support systems for heart failure.
  • Focus on imaging in the diagnosis of cardiovascular diseases: Cardiovascular ultrasound (3D imaging, flow quantification in valve disorders, tissue Doppler), MRI diagnostics, MSCT, EBCT
  • Research on cardiac microcirculation, cardiac vessels, and the pathomechanism of coronary micro-embolization
  • Check-up and follow-up for patients with severe heart failure (transplant)
  • Telemedicine: Development of the cardiac cell phone, of blood pressure and blood sugar cell phones; telemedicine monitoring of pacemakers
